After any kind of treatment, depending upon the type of disease or disability, doctors suggest rehabilitation care to the patient. This care is given by rehabilitation psychologists who have knowledge, skills and experience to provide such rehab treatment. These treatments are prescribed by the doctor so that after the treatment, the patient can get back to normal lifestyle. Sometimes the impact of a disease or disability is so much that even after the treatment, the patient cannot become a part of the normal society, the way he / she used to be before the disease or disability. These treatments may include healing the physical as well as the mental state of mind of the patient. Rehabilitation care for each disease may differ from case to case, but the general procedure applied by all rehabilitation psychologists is as follows.

The first rule of rehabilitation psychology is to study the case history of the patient. This is done to know the exact problem so that an effective treatment program can be designed for him/her. Such programs will include the consultation of the doctor who has treated the patient.
After going through the case study of the patient, the rehabilitation psychologist conducts an interview with the patient to assess his / her state of health. It can be a question answer round or some tests can be conducted to assess the skills of the patient. The patient can also be examined to know his current state of health.
After the above two steps the rehabilitation psychologists formulate programs that will help the patient get back to normal state of mind/health. A patient may go through the program either individually or in a group. The rehabilitation psychologists must closely monitor the progress of the patien. If he feels that the patient is not responding well, he may change the program.
Job of a rehabilitation psychologist is not an easy task. A rehabilitation psychologist has to have patience in treating patients. Patients do not cooperate well, often due to illness; this makes the rehabilitation psychology job more challenging. Irrespective of all these odds, this job gives new leash of life to people who have been suffering from various types of illness and disabilities.
